GASG Meeting 94 - 'Light Matters - Optical Sensing Of Gases & Particles'

25th June, Department Of Engineering Science, University Of Oxford

Our latest meeting at the University of Oxford’s Dept of Engineering Science was held in the midst of one of this summer’s heatwaves which presented some additional logistical challenges, but these were largely overcome and the day featured some excellent talks from a knowledgeable speakers covering a wide range of optical techniques and applications.

Topics covered during the morning were continuous monitoring of air quality in road tunnels, methane detection using hollow-core fibre and the use of TDLS for tomography of aircraft auxiliary power unit exhaust plumes. Following lunch, during which Dr Julian Fells (University of Oxford) kindly took some delegates on a tour of his laboratory, the afternoon session commenced with a description of work on UFP sensing via single photon counting. The NDIR innovations driving ongoing development of Senseair’s successful range of low cost sensors for IAQ and safety applications was then described, and the programme concluded with a presentation on the powerful capabilities offered by frequency comb spectroscopy, which is just beginning to emerge from the laboratory into field applications.

Our speakers, drawn from a wide range of academic and industrial backgrounds, are to be congratulated for making the day such a success with their informative and well explained talks.  Members who were unable to attend can visit the meeting page here which contains all of the presentations approved for publication by the authors. In addition, a full report of the proceedings will be included in our next Newsletter (#86) which will be issued towards the end of the summer.
